Age of Sparta
Battle System
There are several elements of the battle system that will determine whether you will win or lose. The main core of this is the strength of your line up which is determined by Unit strength, Alliance bonus & Fortification boost. This will generate a number that is the strength of your line, ideally you want your number to be higher than your opponent's. However it's possible to win with a smaller number or even lose with a higher number due to the other elements of the battle system. These are Boons, Sentinels & in-battle bonuses which can all dramatically change a battle.
Before you pick your line up let's take a look at the information that's available once you've gone into battle.

The area highlighted in green shows your Attack strength on the left and your Defence strength on the right. Before you select any Units these numbers will be made up of your Fortification boost & Alliance bonus. The number of Alliance members is shown just below this, the more members in your Alliance the higher the bonus.
The area highlighted in red shows your opponent's Attack & Defence strength. As their line up is already selected this consists of their Units' strength, Fortification boost & Alliance Bonus.
The area highlighted in yellow shows how much glory you will gain for a win and how much will be lost should you lose.
The area highlighted in purple shows how each unit type can receive a bonus to their attacks against a particular unit type. This bonus system works like 'rock, paper, scissors' with one type being strong against one and weak against the other but with one type as an exception to this.

AGILE - Strong against Tough & Weak against Magic
TOUGH - Strong against Magic & Weak against Agile
MAGIC - Strong against Agile & Weak against Tough
PREMIUM - Strong against All Other Types

The area highlighted in purple shows the Units that you have available to use in battle. You can scroll through these, tapping on them to manually select the Units you wish to use for battle. Alternatively you can use 'Auto-Deploy' (area highlighted in red) to have your strongest possible line up selected. Word of warning, this may not always be the best idea as some Units may be about to die or considered overkill for the battle.
The area highlighted in green gives you the option to buy Units from the store. However they are only ever Level I Units, will require Gems and are considerably pricy.
The area highlighted in yellow gives you the ability to receive some extra help for battle in the form of 'Helping Hand'. Tapping on this allows you to either choose an Ally or Merc to aid you in battle. The Ally section will show other members of your Alliance, these are free to use but you can only use each Ally once every 24h. The Merc section will give you the option to use Gems to buy a certain amount of Helping Hands, these can be used as many times as needed as long as you have the Gems.

If you need to change a particular Unit tap on their slot (area highlighted in red) to remove them so you can choose another Unit for battle.
Once you are happy with your line up tap on 'Start' (area highlighted in green) to begin the battle.

Once in battle there are several options available to you.
The area highlighted in red shows the symbol you need to tap to activate Helping Hand should you have chosen to use one. If you don't tap this during the battle it won't be used and will be available for another battle.
The area highlighted in yellow shows the symbol you need to tap if you wish to use Boons. Tapping this will take you to the Boon menu. All the Boons you own will be listed here in order of Bronze, Silver & Gold. All other Boons that you don't own will be listed beneath these with the option to buy them at the cost of Gems. Once you've found the boon you wish to use tap on the icon for it to be used in battle.
The area highlighted in green shows the symbol you need to tap in order to pause the battle.
The area highlighted in purple shows the symbol you need to tap to retreat, sometimes you may enter a battle where your opponent's defense line up is a lot stronger than your attack line up. Therefore making you need to use a large amount if not all of your boons to win and probably still losing the battle making any attempt to try to win a very costly endeavour. Making the decision to retreat should be taken before you start the battle and either pick 1 weak expendable Unit (as it will still lose 10 HP) or pick 1 Boss Unit with 0 HP (as it doesn't have the 20% chance of death like normal Units) to start the battle so you can retreat. The best way to avoid this entire scenario is by picking your opponents wisely, obviously you can't be specific in Alliance wars but it does normally pick opponents matched to your ability so you have some chance.
During the battle several types of in-battle bonuses & hazards will appear.
In-battle bonuses come in the form of Unit boosts & various crates.
Units boosts will give particular Units a stronger attack & can happen to both your's and your opponent's Units at any time. If your Units receive the possibility for a boost they will glow blue, tap on them before they stop glowing to activate the boost. When it comes to your opponent's Units they will glow red, tap on them before they stop glowing to disable the boost.
There are two types of crates that can appear whilst in-battle, Health crates & Bonus crates. Health crates can appear on both sides of the screen, they will glow green on your side and glow red on your opponent's. Tapping the green ones will give your Units a health boost and tapping the red ones will stop your opponent's Units receiving a health boost. Bonus crates will only appear on your side on the screen, tap these to receive Gold, XP and/or Faith. The crates that appear on your side of the screen will come with a heads up in the form of an exclaimation mark inside a orange/yellow triangle before they appear on screen.
Hazards come in 3 forms; enemy Boons, exploding barrels & blockades.
Enemy Boons will appear in exactly the same kind of animation/crate drop as if you were to use that Boon. Depending on the type of Boon being used against you, you'll need to disable it by tapping the animation or crate being dropped before it becomes active. There are some enemy Boons that will have a direct impact on your Units, when these are used your Units will glow red, by tapping these Units you can disable or make them avoid the Boon that has just been used by your opponent. Stopping enemy Boons as much as possible will stop your opponent from being able to gain an advantage over you that could cost you victory.
Exploding barrels appear on both sides of the screen, they will all glow red. When they are on your side tap on them as soon as possible to stop them from damaging your Units. When they are on your opponent's side tap them to cause damage to their Units.
Blockades will only ever appear in Land battles and only on your side of the screen. They will glow red and need to be tapped before your Units reach them to avoid having damaged inflicted upon them by the blockade.
A good rule of thumb to apply to battles is to tap anything that moves or glows.

Sometimes when battling an opponent in PvP you may come across a Sentinel. Sentinels are part of your opponent's defensive line up. Even though they don't themselves inflict any damage upon your Units they do provide your opponent with an unblockable Boon which can make battles that bit harder to win.
The area highlighted in green shows the Sentinel. If your opponent has one it will always be visible as a Pegasus Unit behind your opponent's line up.
The area highlighted in red shows the unblockable Boon. These Boons will always appear in a different colour to Boons that are blockable. In this case the Sentinel Boon is a Shock and appears in green rather than the usual white/blue colour of a blockable Boon.
A Sentinel Boon will typically only appear once during the course of a battle but by doing the 'Twin Strike' Agora upgrade this can result in the Boon being used twice.
Outcomes of Units Used in Battle
-
Unit begins battle with good amount of HP and survives the entire battle.
Unit will lose 10 HP.
-
Unit begins battle with good amount of HP and dies in battle.
Unit will lose 20 HP.
-
Unit begins battle with 20 HP or less and dies in battle.
Unit will lose all remaining HP and die.
It will be lost unless you revive at the cost of Gems.
-
Unit begins battle with 1 HP - 10 HP and survives the entire battle.
Unit will lose all remaining HP and start the next battle on 0 HP.
-
Unit begins battle with 0 HP and survives the entire battle.
Unit will have a 20% chance of death and being lost unless revived with Gems.
If Unit survives it will remain on 0 HP.
Boss Units are exempt to this 20% chance of death once they reach 0 HP but they must survive the entire battle so they're not lost. If a Boss Unit should die in battle with 20 HP or less it will die like any other Unit would and will require Gems to revive it.
